GSA Corporation has created a video introducing the challenges currently facing Japan’s forestry sector and presenting Deep Forestry’s technology as one potential solution.
Japan’s forestry industry faces a range of issues, including an aging workforce, labor shortages, the burden of field surveys, and insufficient information on forest resources.
Forest surveys in particular require workers to enter mountainous areas and inspect and measure trees individually, which demands considerable time and manpower. In forests with steep slopes or unstable ground conditions, the physical burden on workers and operational safety are also significant concerns.
The video introduces these challenges and presents the below-canopy autonomous drone and AI analysis technology developed by Sweden-based Deep Forestry AB as a potential solution.
The Deep Forestry drone autonomously flies beneath the forest canopy, detecting and avoiding surrounding trees even in environments where GPS signals may be weak or unavailable, while collecting detailed three-dimensional forest data.
The collected data is analyzed using AI to generate 3D point-cloud models of the forest and detailed information on individual trees, including their location, height, diameter at breast height, stem shape, tree count, and estimated timber volume.
This technology is expected to improve the efficiency of forest surveys, reduce the workload placed on field personnel, and enable forest resource data to be used for harvesting plans, forest management plans, and other operational activities.
