GSA Corporation contributed an article on the below-canopy autonomous drone “Deep Forestry” to Vol. 46, No. 3 (2026) of the Journal of the Remote Sensing Society of Japan, published by the Remote Sensing Society of Japan.
The article introduces the below-canopy autonomous drone and AI analysis technologies developed by Sweden-based Deep Forestry AB, including their technical features and potential applications in Japan’s forestry and forest management sectors.
Japan’s forestry sector faces a number of challenges, including labor shortages, an aging workforce, and the significant time and effort required to assess forest resources.
Deep Forestry represents a new approach to forest measurement by combining autonomous drone flight beneath the forest canopy with AI-based analysis, enabling forests and individual trees to be captured and managed as digital 3D data.
GSA has been working to introduce Deep Forestry technology in Japan through field flights and surveys, forest 3D surveying services, and collaboration with universities and research institutions, while evaluating its applicability in Japanese forest environments.
Through this contribution, we hope to introduce Deep Forestry’s technology to researchers and engineers involved in remote sensing and forest measurement, and to encourage further discussion and collaboration on new approaches to acquiring and utilizing 3D forest data.
